Clyde Vet Group's equine charity of choice.

2007 Scottish Equine Service Provider of the year

Horse trotting-up at Clyde Vet Group, LanarkThe Equine Division of Clyde Vet Group was formed on the 1st of August 2003 following the merger of Acorn Veterinary Centre and Clyde Valley Veterinary Centre.  The practice is divided into three divisions each of which runs separately: equine, farm and small animal.  The equine division moved in July 2005 to new custom-built premises on a 2 ½ acre site at the New Lanark Market in Hyndford Road.

In our practice we treat all equines from top class racing stock to the most treasured child’s pony.   Andrew McDiarmid is the partner responsible for the equine division and Louise Cornish, David Sutton, Austen Marr, Chris Calder and Alan Mueller assist him.   The work load is divided between serving our first opinion clients in central Scotland and receiving referred horses from other Veterinary practices in Scotland and the North of England.

The equine division has three vets who have obtained Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons equine certificate status.

Ultrasound of tendon tearFor our first opinion cases we visit clients to treat horses with all routine conditions including lameness, colic, dental conditions, respiratory and reproduction conditions.   To assist with this we have portable endoscopes, x-ray machines, ultrasound scanners for pregnancy, heart and tendon scanning, dental equipment including motorised equipment, and a portable shock therapy machine.

The equine clinic has full hospitalisation facilities.  The facilities include a gantry mounted X-ray machine, custom built stocks, ultrasound, shock therapy, scintigraphy, loading bank, outside and inside trot up and three surfaces to lunge horses on. A resident in-house equine nurse lives on site.

Knock-down room and theatre for horses There is a custom built operating theatre where horses enter via an overhead hoist from a Linatex covered knock down box, where assisted induction and recovery can be undertaken.

We are currently applying for equine Tier 3 (equine hospital) status.

We offer a referral service for many areas of equine work including arthroscopy, anaesthesia, medicine referrals, scintigraphy, ultrasound scanning, upper respiratory surgery, cardiology, X-ray, reproduction (including AI) and general surgery.

We also offer various services to assist horses in recovery including, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, remedial farriery, dental work and physiotherapy.

Since opening in 2005 we have received referrals from Veterinary surgeons from all parts of Scotland and the North of England. The majority of the referrals have been for orthopaedic related problems.Horse being prepared for surgery

We are on the BEVA list of approved practices willing to take equine emergencies.

The equine division aims to offer a prompt, professional, efficient and compassionate service to our clients and their horses, as well as pursuing the goal of clinical excellence.
