Dairy – Milksure

The majority of our dairy farms have completed the initial Milksure training, however if there is a demand for business owners or dairy staff to attend a course then we will run one this year.

We will be running more practical foot trimming courses this summer following the popularity of our previous courses. This course is open to anyone interested whether it be to sharpen up your current skills or simply learn how to hold a hoof knife. We will also run through some of the most common problems you are likely to encounter in cows’ feet.

The outline of the course is as follows:

  • Run through of Dutch five step method of foot trimming

  • Common lesions seen on farms, how to treat and how to prevent them
  • Practical trimming session practicing on cows and cadavers

We run calving and colostrum management course for dairy and beef farms. The course is useful for beginners and new team members but also provide a great refresher for experienced cattle keepers. In particular, the colostrum management part of the course is very useful to all farmers. The course covers the following:

  • Post-calving care of the calf and cow including common infections and presentations
  • Colostrum management and how to measure the quality of colostrum

This course is a fully APHA-approved AI course which is a legal requirement for anyone looking to carry out their own AI on farm. The course involves theoretical and practical sessions over four days with a final assessment. Material covered include:

  • The legalities surrounding AI

  • The reproductive cycle in cows and correct timing of service.
  • Anatomy of the reproductive tract including cadaver specimens.
  • Identification of the reproductive tract in live cows.

Course attendees leave with the confidence to safely perform AI as well as a better understanding of cattle fertility.

This course gives you a comprehensive understanding of the lambing process, equipping you with the valuable knowledge on when to intervene during lambing. You will learn essential techniques for preparing and managing the lambing season, along with a wealth of practical tips and expert advice. We have access to lambing simulators which provide a hands-on learning experience.
